Security Officer’s Intergrity Acknowledged

February 4th, 2010

While selling tickets at the Cooper Talent Show in November, Heart Failure Program Director Maryann C. Powell, R.N., M.S.N., was so impressed with the actions of Security Officer Osvaldo O. Santos, she wrote a letter to his boss, Security Director Paul B. Murray, crediting Officer Santos’ honesty, integrity and kindness. Her letter follows:

“I would like to take a minute to let you know about an employee of yours who did a really nice thing for someone that he did not even know. At the Cooper Talent Show, a Mr. Santos was in the area of the ticket sellers, where he approached me with a wad of $20 bills and asked if I had dropped them from the money box. I said I did not think I did, but I would hold onto the money and see if I could tell if it was missing from the till when I counted at the end. We were swamped with people buying tickets so I just did not have one minute to stop and try to figure out how much it was or if it came from the till.

A little while later, a young woman approached me and said that the Security Guard had told her to stop over because he had found the money she appeared to be looking for and that I had it. The wad of $20’s was exactly where I had left it-on the table near the cash box. She was able to tell me that it was 100 dollars and that she had dropped it right behind where I was stationed. I gave her the money and she was extremely happy and grateful.

Not everyone who found that pile of cash would have turned it in, but Mr. Santos had no hesitation; he turned it in where he thought it might have come from.

On behalf of all of us, especially the woman who last the cash, we would like to recognize and thank him for his honesty, his integrity and his spirit of camaraderie. Please acknowledge him and thank him for his kindness.”

I was a witness to the incident. After a coworker said she lost her money, I encouraged her to inquire if anyone had turned it in, despite feeling that she had lost her money forever. She too was very skeptical, stating “it is highly unlikely someone would be that honest.” We were both estatic to find out that there are still people who are just that honest! What a fine testament to the integrity of our Security Officers. We Salute You, Officer Santos!!
